The CEO's Rolodex: Relationship Intelligence vs. Networking

We have optimized connectivity, but destroyed connection. Here is why trust is a currency that AI cannot automate.
In the modern executive landscape, "networking" has become a superficial word and exercise. It has been reduced to a game of volume. We have optimized and prioritized connectivity (the technical ability to reach someone) but we have destroyed connections (the trust factor).
As a CEO, I don't need 5,000 loose connections. I need a 'Personal Board of Directors'—the small circle of people I can call when a strategic pivot is required or a critical deal hangs in the balance.
The Power of Compound Relationships
In finance, we obsess over compound interest. Yet, we often treat relationships as transactional. You meet, you ask for something, you move on. I'll argue that like interest the real ROI of networking comes from compound relationships: trust that is deposited over decades of engagement, not days.
I discussed this recently on the Feather podcast, sharing a story about my Steve Diedrick, the founder of Redmond Research.
Fifteen years ago, a colleague dared me to take a call with Steve. I was skeptical. I took the dare, took the call, and Steve placed me at Samsung. To a transactional recruiter, that was a "deal closed." In fact, I admit that back then, I thought our transaction was done.
But Steve kept calling. He didn't ask for favors; he checked in on my life. Over the next decade, we didn't just talk about jobs. We talked about market shifts, global culture, and leadership philosophy. He turned a transaction into a partnership.
Because of that compounded trust, when I need to assess a Board seat or hire a VP today, I don't need a 6-month vetting process. One phone call to Steve cuts through the noise. That is the speed of trust.
Where AI Fits in Building Connections and Trust
This brings us to the intersection of AI and Humanity. There is a valid fear that AI will destroy relationships by automating insincerity. If you use ChatGPT to write a "Hey Joe, how are you?" email, you haven't optimized a relationship; you've automated the connectivity. People can feel the difference

But in my conversation with Jeremy (Greene) Taub, founder of Feather, we discussed a different view: AI as Relationship Intelligence. If you treat AI as your "Chief of Staff"—using it to remember birthdays, context, family details, and follow-up timelines—it removes the cognitive load of "data management" so you can focus on empathy and building life-long connections.
The Trap: Using AI to write the entire message - easy, quick and transparent. (Synthetic)
The Opportunity: Using AI to remind you when to write the message and why it matters. (Strategic).
Relationship Intelligence for the Executive: The Core 20
So where do you go from here? Stop networking for the rolodex and start building your Personal Board of trusted connections. Here is the framework I use to audit my own relationship health (admittedly, I'm still learning and building this discipline).
1. The Audit. Do you have a "Core 10-20" people you trust? These are the people most critical to your long-term growth (not just your current job).
2. The Value Question. Ask yourself: Have I added value to them in the last 90 days? This requires a mindset shift - it's not about you! It is critical to pay attention to other's needs!
3. The Action - "Pay it Forward". If the answer above is no, send a message today. Do not ask for a favor. Do not ask to "pick their brain." Just share an idea, an article, or an introduction that genuinely helps them.
In a world of synthetic media, automated outreach and 'likes', trust is the only currency that cannot be inflated.
I discuss these themes in depth on this week's episode of the Feather podcast with Jeremy Taub. We explore the dare that started my Samsung journey and why modern leaders need to stop counting likes and start building trust.
